The Sacramento Chapter of APWA promotes education for public works and related fields through ongoing seminar programs and a successful scholarship program.

In 1994, the Sacramento Chapter leadership vowed additional commitment to the education mission through creation of the EDUCATION ENDOWMENT FUND (EEF). The goal of the EEF is to provide additional educational opportunities and to enhance educational experiences in the public works field.

Since an initial Chapter investment of $36,000, the EEF has grown over $1,500,000 through the generous donations of Founders, Sustaining Members, Patrons, and other contributors and fundraising. The EEF is destined to become the preeminent sponsor of engineering and science education in Northern California.

Why the EEF Matters by Diane Nakano, EEF Trustee, EEF Sustaining Member, and 2012 APWA Sacramento Chapter President

I became a Sustaining Member of the EEF out of sense of duty.  I continue to donate annually out of a sense of commitment to the mission of the EEF.  At one particular Chapter Monthly Luncheon, Dr. Kevan Shafizadeh of CSU Sacramento, came to talk about the $15,000 grant for a traffic lab he had received from the EEF.  He spoke about how this money and his grant request had resulted in the donation of traffic signal controller(s), the purchase of controller software, and other supporting equipment.  He also shared that instead of being allocated a storage closet to hold equipment necessary to support his transportation classes, he was allocated classroom space for the traffic lab.  But the part of his story that truly touched me, was how the money from EEF legitimized transportation as a true civil engineering discipline at Sac State.  He got a little teary-eyed and recounting this story still gets to me to this day.
