This is the advanced-level classification in the professional engineering series responsible for performing the most complex work assigned to the series. Incumbents regularly work on tasks which are varied and complex, requiring considerable discretion and independent judgment.
Positions in the classification rely on experience and judgment to perform assigned duties. Assignments are given with general guidelines and incumbents are responsible for establishing objectives, timelines, and methods to complete assignments. Completed work is reviewed only from an overall standpoint in terms of feasibility, compatibility with other work, or effectiveness in meeting requirements or expected results.
This class is distinguished from the Principal Civil Engineer in that the latter is the highest-level class in the professional engineering series and is the full supervisory-level class responsible for organizing, assigning, supervising, and reviewing the work of engineering staff.
